In Pferdsdorf, the Youth Red Cross of Bad Salzungen demonstrated their capabilities at the local tournament

Last Saturday, the German Red Cross (DRK) youth competition took place in Pferdsdorf, with three children's groups and two youth groups participating. The competition aimed to test the participants' knowledge of first aid, creativity, and team spirit in realistic accident scenarios.

At one station, the youth had to dress a head wound and care for another patient with a heavily bleeding wound. The local community of Vacha provided excellent catering for the event, ensuring that the competitors remained well-fed throughout the day. The makeup artists and actors made the injuries look realistic, thanks to the efforts of Maria Merten, the district youth leader.

In the children's groups competition, the local community Geisa placed first, Tiefenort second, and Vacha third. The winning team, Geisa, will represent JRK Bad Salzungen at the state competition next year. In the youth groups competition, the mountain rescue service Bad Liebenstein placed first, and the local community Vacha placed second. The youth of the mountain rescue service in Bad Liebenstein won 1st place in age group 2, with the group from Geisa taking 1st place in age group 1.

Thorsten Rittner, the board chairman of the JRK, expressed his appreciation for the high number of volunteers and the motivation of the "young paramedics." He also thanked district youth leaders Maria Merten and Diana Wiegmann for the smooth organization of the event, as well as the youth group leaders, parents, and helpers. Uwe Hahn, a water rescue colleague, conducted the swim test directly on the Ulster.

At another station, the participants had to build a raft using various natural materials, requiring creativity, ingenuity, and teamwork. This station tested the competitors' ability to work together under pressure and come up with innovative solutions. The competition planning ensured that the disciplines to be completed were as close to reality as possible, providing a challenging and rewarding experience for all involved.

The JRK, the independent youth organization of the German Red Cross, has around 140,000 active members nationwide, aged 6 to 27, who are engaged in health, environment, peace, and international understanding. The competition was a great opportunity for these young people to demonstrate what they had learned in their group sessions on first aid and to showcase their skills in a competitive setting. The two youth groups representing in the next round of the DRK state competition are the group from Geisa (in age group 1) and the youth of the Bergwacht Bad Liebenstein (in age group 2). The competition was a success, and the participants left Pferdsdorf with a sense of accomplishment and a renewed commitment to helping others.
