Unapproved Slogans, Physical Injuries, Intoxication Incidents during Vacation - Illegal Slogans, Physical Assault, and Intoxicated Driving During the Celebration
A Raucous Ascension Day in Saxony
Wowzers! Ascension Day this year was quite a wild ride in Saxony, Germany. The state protection department is currently investigating a boisterous group of around 50 individuals for chanting forbidden far-right slogans on the Dresden Elbe meadows. The group reportedly hit up the milk pavilion late Thursday afternoon, as per the police. It's not all fun and games when they started belting out a racist version of the party hit "L'amour toujours" by Gigi D'Agostino.
Symbolic Showdowns
The Dresden police recorded eight instances of the display of unconstitutional symbols during their patrols in the state capital and districts of Meißen and Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge on Ascension Day. Reminds you of a colorful paint-by-numbers, doesn't it? Approximately 190 officers were on duty, with the riot police backing them up.
The 30 recorded offenses included a handful of assault cases and four instances of drunk driving. Threesome of teenagers, aged 15, 17, and 18, launched an alcohol-fueled assault on a tram driver, leaving him with some serious bruises. He required hospital treatment after the trio repeatedly disregarded the alcohol ban on the tram. The police are now digging into the wounds of this case of dangerous bodily harm.
A Quiet Day for Emergency Services
The fire department and rescue service in Dresden had a relatively tame day, with rescue workers tending to several alcohol-poisoned individuals and those injured from falls or physical altercations. They were called out 234 times, with a doctor on-site in 58 cases. The rescue helicopter made two appearances. The fire department reported five fires and 12 other incidents, including assisting with CPR and carrying assistance for the rescue service.
Unrest in Oelsnitz
The Zwickau police had their hands full. They had to manage cases of bodily harm, disputes, drunk driving, property damage, and disturbances of the peace. The fiercest disturbance occurred in the Taltitz district of Oelsnitz. After approaching a member of a six-person group, aged 16 to 21, at the Pirk dam beach, a man ended up getting beaten up badly. His companions joined in, and the group attacked several people. Fourteen people were hurt, with four requiring hospitalization.
All six suspects were hammered, with the highest blood alcohol level clocked at 2.14 in an 18-year-old. He was also found to be in possession of an F4 firework, which is only permitted for professionals. Another 18-year-old tested positive for cannabis and opiates in addition to a blood alcohol level of 2.06, and was also spotted operating a motorcycle without a valid license or registration.
Leipzig Keeps it Low-Key
From the police's point of view, Ascension Day was a relatively uneventful holiday in and around Leipzig. Only a smattering of deployments occurred, mostly related to the occasional traffic accidents involving intoxicated cyclists.
Popular Libations
As for the cyclists found to be intoxicated, well, we've heard of some questionable biking choices, but this takes the cake. In Torgau (Nordsachsen district), officers found a 49-year-old with a 2.85% alcohol level in his breath after he took a tumble into a ditch beside a cycle path. He was sent off to the hospital. A 56-year-old's cycling escapade came to an end in the Leipzig district of Stötteritz. He collided with the side mirror of a parked car in the evening, rolling off and registering a breath alcohol level of 1.96%.
A 35-year-old escaped with minor injuries after losing control of his bike in the afternoon in the Neußen district of Belgern-Schildau (Nordsachsen district). He crashed into a wrought iron fence in his tumble, testing positive for a 2.32% alcohol level. In the wee hours of Friday, the police found a 22-year-old with a breath alcohol level of 1.74% who had been creating a spectacle for several reasons: riding without lights, running red lights, and showing signs of balance issues.
Ascension Day Antics and Other Happenings
In case you're curious about Ascension Day in Germany this year, it seems like the holiday went off without any notable incidents in Saxony or any other part of Germany. But 2025 has been quite the year for Germany, with incidents like the car attack in Munich on February 13 resulting in casualties and various other events. There have also been political endorsements and controversies involving political parties like the AfD.
Cheers to another chaotic holiday season! 🍻
