In a shocking incident that occurred early Tuesday morning, a 29-year-old individual, later identified as being from the Russian Federation, was taken into custody following a knife threat at a hotel in Vienna's Wieden district.

According to the police spokesman, Markus Dittrich, the incident unfolded at a hotel where the suspect, allegedly wielding a knife, threatened a receptionist. The receptionist had refused to open the glass entrance door and instead called the authorities.

The suspect was arrested approximately an hour and a half later at Karlsplatz. However, during the course of the arrest, it is reported that the individual struck a sleeping homeless person with a broomstick at the same location.

A bread knife was found on the individual, and during the subsequent interrogation, the suspect made incoherent statements and was uncooperative. The police described the individual as "clearly mentally disturbed."

As of late July 2025, there is no specific publicly available information regarding the mental health history or current status of the suspect. Previous incidents involving suspects with a violent background in Vienna have not mentioned any mental health details either.

While the suspect's mental health history and current condition remain undisclosed, such information would typically be reported by law enforcement or medical authorities after a thorough evaluation. For updates or more detailed background, monitoring local Austrian news or official police communications in Vienna would be necessary.
