Hospital fire in Hamburg claims lives of three; distressed individuals plead for help from upper-tier windows
In the wee hours of June 1, a calamitous inferno gripped the geriatric ward of St. Mary's Hospital in Hamburg, Germany. The blaze originated on the ground floor and raged up to the level above, engulfing significant parts of the four-story building.
The first responders, firefighters, rushing to the scene shortly after midnight, discovered patients desperate for help, crying out from windows. In their heroic efforts, they managed to save several lives using ladders.
The fiery ordeal proved fatal for three elderly souls, aged 84, 85, and 87. At least 34 individuals were injured, with over 50 reported injuries by some sources. Among the injured, one critical case was reported, while others suffered from serious or minor injuries.
The hospital's hours of turmoil came to a close roughly 20 minutes later, with firefighters successfully extinguishing the blaze. In the immediate aftermath, part of the building was evacuated, with most of the injured being treated on-site or moved to nearby clinics.
Subsequent investigations hint that the fire might have been ignited by a 72-year-old patient, who was apprehended at the scene on suspicion of arson.
