As the scorching summer heat sweeps across the nation, wild creatures start to stir, including venomous creatures that can give humans a nasty surprise. Although venomous bites are unusual—with the US averaging only about 30 bites per million people per year—they can still pose a threat, especially if it's from a rattlesnake. With Colorado and other Western states experiencing a exceptionally wet spring this year, wildlife experts have urged outdoor enthusiasts to be on high alert for possible encounters with these slithering creatures of trouble.

"In the Denver metropolitan area, you might expect around 20 to 30 snake bites annually," Kennon Heard, a medical toxicology and pharmacology professor at Colorado University, recently mentioned in an interview.

Even though rattlesnakes are more common in temperate states like Colorado and across the southwest, over 25 diverse species inhabit the majority of the US. These cold-blooded reptiles typically hibernate under rocks and other hideouts during chilly months, but they emerge as the mercury rises. Rattlesnakes usually target smaller prey such as mice, rats, rabbits, and birds. Their numbers tend to surge if the spring is wet, as was the case in 2025.

Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and Stanford University investigated the potential link between wet springs and rattlesnake bites in 2018, and found a possible connection. They theorized that an abundance of rainfall could lead to a larger prey population compared to during a drought. With more prey crnewcommand exposed their theory, an increase in rattlers would likely follow, leading to a heightened risk of human-snake encounters.

It's important to remember that rattlesnakes generally avoid humans. However, if they feel threatened, they won't hesitate to use their venom on us. If bitten, swift medical attention is crucial.

Rattlesnake venom contains a hemotoxic anticoagulant developed to both form and dissolve clots. This causes blood to pool in surrounding tissues, depriving muscles of essential nutrients and oxygen, which can lead to life-threatening tissue death. The amount of venom released during a bite can vary significantly, and in some instances, no venom may be released at all. However, regardless of the amount, immediate medical attention is crucial.

Also, be aware of common misconceptions about treating a snake bite, such as cutting around the wound or attempting to suck out the venom. These methods can worsen the situation and delay needed medical care. Additionally, snake bite kits aren't as effective as professional assistance.

Most rattlesnake bites on humans are not aggression-driven. In many cases, they happen when someone tries to physically handle the snake. In rare, severe circumstances, Heard suggests that a cellphone—with dialing 911 as the most crucial tool—can be a valuable aid in such situations.
