Care Workers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Endure High Absence Rates, Here's Why and How to Improve

Health Care Workers Frequently Suffer More Illnesses Than Employees in Other Sectors - Healthcare Professionals, Specifically Nurses, Experiencing Higher Illness Rates Compared to Workers in Other Fields

The heavy burden faced by care workers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern becomes evident in a considerable sick-leave rate compared to other occupations, according to the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) in the region. Care workers averaged 32.6 days absent last year, significantly eclipsing the national average of 28.5 days and the overall average of 24.6 days across all professions.

It's not a secret that care work is no walk in the park. The physical and emotional demands, lack of recognition, and poor work-life balance often lead to burnout and health issues for these indispensable professionals.

TK regional manager Manon Austenat-Wied highlighted the importance of nurturing a health-conscious work environment and making care a more appealing profession for the future. "It's high time we honor the tireless efforts of our caregivers by fostering environments that promote their well-being," she added.

The research findings were based on the health insurance certificates of around 103,000 employed individuals with TK in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The absence rates reveal a disconcerting trend, as care facilities in the past have had to close due to staff shortages.

Care workers are a vital asset in our aging society, with more than 120,000 individuals in need of care in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. To address the issue and secure care offerings, even in rural areas, the "Pact for Care" was initiated in the state in autumn of 2023.

Here's how we can reduce absence rates and create a healthier work environment for caregivers:

  1. Training and Support: Regular training and support systems can help care workers tackle stress and develop resilience.
  2. Recognition and Appreciation: Showing care workers the appreciation they deserve can boost morale and motivation, making them feel valued.
  3. Flexible Work Arrangements: Offering flexible working hours or shifts ensures a balanced work-life equation for caregivers.
  4. Health and Wellness Initiatives: Implementing health and wellness programs, such as mental health support or physical activity incentives, can help care workers maintain their health.
  5. Policy Changes: Advocating for policy changes that support care workers, such as better wages or benefits, can improve their well-being and job satisfaction.

By employing these strategies, we can make care work not only a viable but attractive career choice in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and beyond. The health of our care workforce is vital for the care and well-being of our aging society.

  1. To address the high absence rates in care work, implementing a comprehensive community policy that includes vocational training, resilience-building workshops, and ongoing support systems could significantly improve the well-being of care workers.
  2. By integrating science-backed workplace-wellness initiatives, such as medical-condition management programs and nutrition education, care facilities can promote the health and wellness of their staff, reducing sick leave and improving overall productivity.
  3. To enhance the attractiveness of care work as a career, promoting recognition, appreciation, and creating a supportive, health-focused work environment can help motivate and retain highly skilled care workers, ensuring the continued provision of high-quality care for those in need.
