"Groundbreaking" Medication Marks 50-Year Hiatus as Novel Asthma Attack Remedy
In a groundbreaking discovery, researchers have developed a novel treatment for acute asthma attacks and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The treatment, known as benralizumab, has shown remarkable efficacy, surpassing the current standard steroid treatment and reducing the risk of severe lung damage.
Asthma, affecting over 262 million people worldwide, is characterized by symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath, often triggered by environmental allergens. COPD, although difficult to quantify, is estimated to be the third leading cause of global deaths. Common COPD symptoms can resemble those of asthma, but typically worsen with time, most commonly occurring in adults over 50, and often caused by smoking or air pollution exposure.
Sudden, acute episodes of both diseases can be fatal, with approximately half of asthma attacks and one-third of COPD flare-ups resulting from inflammation caused by an overabundance of a type of white blood cell called eosinophils, known as eosinophilic exacerbations.
While asthma treatments have remained largely unchanged for the past half-century, the recent clinical trial of benralizumab offers a promising new option. Led by scientists at King's College London, the trial involved hospitals in London and Oxford, UK. The monoclonal antibody, administered as an injection, has already been used to manage severe asthma cases, but this trial focused on its potential for treating acute attacks.
A group of 158 high-risk patients were divided into three groups: one received benralizumab injections and a placebo pill, another received a placebo injection and standard prednisolone pills for five days, and the third received both the new benralizumab injection and the standard steroid pills. After 28 days, symptoms like coughing and shortness of breath had significantly improved in those receiving benralizumab (with or without steroids). At the 90-day mark, 74 percent of those only receiving the current standard treatment required further medical care. Conversely, those taking benralizumab needed fewer doctor visits and reported improved quality of life.
One participant in the study, 77-year-old Geoffrey Pointing, shared, "During a flare-up, it's hard to describe how you feel - it's difficult to breathe. Anything that eases that and gives you a normal life is what you want. And on the injections, it's fantastic."
Professor Mona Bafadhel, the lead investigator, stated, "The significant advance is the finding that targeted therapy works in asthma and COPD attacks. Instead of giving everyone the same treatment, our findings indicate that targeting high-risk patients with highly targeted treatment is much better than guessing what treatment they need."
This breakthrough could revolutionize the management of asthma and COPD, with Professor Bafadhel noting that current treatments for these diseases have remained stagnant for 50 years despite causing thousands of deaths annually. The study was published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine.
