Yakutsk Rocks: A Cancer Awareness Run for the Brave

Get ready to lace up those sneakers and hit the pavement, Yakutsk! The city's first charity run is here, and it's all for an incredible cause—fighting cancer. Sardana Trofimova, an accomplished athlete, serves as the event's ambassador, according to Yakutia Information Agency (YASIA).

Over half a thousand residents have registered for this inspiring event, with all proceeds going straight to the Yakutsk oncology patients support fund "AntiCancer". The initiative was born within the walls of the Yakutsk Republican Oncological Dispensary.

"This concept originated from our ambitious young specialists," explains Dr. Tatiana Nikolaeva, head honcho at the Yakutsk Republican Oncological Dispensary. "We've been working towards this big day for almost a year. Our goal is to spread knowledge about cancer, motivate people to prioritize their health, and offer a helping hand to our patients who've faced adversity. Cancer diagnoses have increased at earlier stages lately, boosting the chances of successful treatment and complete recovery. Today, we have patients, hospital staff, and local Yakutsk citizens joining the run. There are even some participants who've traveled from different cities to be part of this movement."

The run offers two distances—5km and 10km—and boasts support from Yakutia's Ministry of Health, Ministry of Sport, and the republic's athletics federation. Among the participants is Yakutia's Deputy Prime Minister, Olga Balabkina.

"For me, this run represents backing the public organization 'AntiCancer'. My family has lost loved ones to this disease," shares Olga Balabkina. "I've always underlined that addressing cancer-related issues is one of my top priorities, no matter what my government position is. Psychological support is crucial. Thanks to the collective efforts of our medical and social sectors, life expectancy in Yakutia has noticeably improved."
