Freiburg University Hospital Wins German Sustainability Award for Pioneering Healthcare
Freiburg University Hospital has been recognised for its outstanding commitment to sustainability, winning the 'Healthcare' category of the prestigious German Sustainability Award. The hospital's comprehensive approach to ecological, social, and economic sustainability has earned it the title of a pioneer in low-emission healthcare.
The hospital's journey towards sustainability began with the establishment of a code of conduct, featuring ten binding principles. These include investing in energy-efficient infrastructure, promoting environmentally friendly mobility, and integrating sustainability into research and teaching. This holistic approach has led to concrete CO₂ savings and the development of forward-looking concepts, with broad employee involvement.
The hospital's commitment to sustainability is evident in various areas. It is working to align its energy supply with long-term climate protection goals, including converting its own power plant to CO2-free technologies. It is also optimising its laundry and nutrition processes to reduce emissions and costs. Additionally, the hospital has implemented a greenhouse gas calculator for hospitals, built in timber construction, and explored heat supply through green hydrogen. These initiatives demonstrate the hospital's dedication to sustainable practices across all aspects of its operations.
Freiburg University Hospital's dedication to sustainability has not gone unnoticed. It will be honoured at the award ceremony on December 5, 2025, in Düsseldorf, as part of the #DNP25 sustainability congress. The hospital's win is a testament to its responsibility towards future generations and its role as a driver for the sustainable transformation of the healthcare industry.
