Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest and standing trial for an alleged coup attempt, according to recent reports. The trial has sparked a diplomatic crisis between Brazil and the United States, with Donald Trump, a close ally of Bolsonaro, criticizing the proceedings as a "witch hunt."

Bolsonaro was allowed temporary leave from house arrest for a medical appointment in August 2025. He visited a hospital in Brasília, where he is scheduled to undergo a colonoscopy due to his chronic gastrointestinal issues. The visit was not without incident, as Bolsonaro was observed suffering from reflux and hiccup symptoms.

The attack that led to Bolsonaro's current health issues occurred during the 2018 presidential campaign. The attack was reminiscent of the storming of the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021. The attack caused significant damage and Bolsonaro has been receiving medical attention for his ongoing gastrointestinal problems during his house arrest.

Bolsonaro lost the 2022 election to leftist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, but he is accused of attempting a coup to overturn the results of the election. Brazilian police have formally accused him and one of his sons of obstruction of justice related to this case. Evidence presented includes messages indicating Bolsonaro planned to flee to Argentina to seek political asylum, citing political persecution, with a draft asylum request dated February 2024.

Bolsonaro's lawyers have requested the temporary suspension of his house arrest for medical reasons. On January 1, 2023, Bolsonaro supporters stormed the Congress, the presidential palace, and the Supreme Court in Brasília. The U.S. government imposed sanctions on Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods in late July in response to the political crisis.

As of August 2025, Bolsonaro remains under house arrest, with measures such as wearing an electronic ankle tag and his movement being monitored under court orders. The trial against Bolsonaro continues, with the former president maintaining his innocence.

  1. The community policy regarding the monitoring of individuals under house arrest, as applied to former President Jair Bolsonaro, includes the use of an electronic ankle tag.
  2. The health-and-wellness sector has been heavily involved in managing Bolsonaro's chronic gastrointestinal issues, with vocational training potentially needed for medical professionals treating patients with similar conditions.
  3. The politics surrounding Bolsonaro's trial for his alleged coup attempt and obstruction of justice have caused a strained relationship between Brazil and the United States. This diplomatic crisis has also raised broader issues in the realm of general news and crime-and-justice, with implications for science and medical-conditions due to the former president's ongoing health issues.
