FDA Approves Another Generic Abortion Pill, Expanding Access

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved another generic version of the abortion pill mifepristone. This move follows a review of the drug's safety by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, who previously delayed decisions on vaccines under their leadership.

The FDA initially approved mifepristone in 2000, gradually easing access over time. The approval process for generic drugs is usually straightforward, with multiple copycat versions typically gaining approval after the original drug's patent expires. Evita Solutions, the drugmaker, filed its application to market mifepristone four years ago, with approval expected in January next year. However, the process was delayed, and the drug was only recently approved.

The approval has sparked criticism from anti-abortion groups and politicians aligned with the Trump administration. Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri has expressed his lack of confidence in the FDA's leadership.

The FDA's approval of another generic mifepristone product is expected to increase access to the drug. The move comes after a review of the drug's safety by federal officials and follows a pattern of gradual access expansion since the FDA's initial approval in 2000. Despite criticism from some quarters, the approval is set to expand the availability of the abortion pill.
