FDA Alert: Potential Lead Contamination in Certain Nonstick Cookware

In the realm of kitchen appliances and cookware, there are numerous brands vying for attention. One commerce editor at NBC Select, Zoe Malin, has made a name for herself by delving into the intricacies of kitchen trends, appliances, cookware, and more. From product recalls to articles on forever chemicals and plastic cooking alternatives, Malin's insights are invaluable for those seeking to equip their kitchens with safe and durable cookware.

Malin has had positive experiences with several brands, including Greenpan, Our Place, and Caraway. The Greenpan Valencia Pro Ceramic Nonstick Fry Pan Set, which she has used for two years, remains in excellent condition, boasting a scratch-resistant interior with no visible marks. The set includes 8-, 9.5-, and 11-inch frying pans, all of which feature a stainless steel body and a ceramic scratch-resistant, nonstick coating.

The Caraway 10.5-inch fry pan, another favourite of Malin's, is a versatile addition to any kitchen. Its nontoxic chemical composition and ceramic coating make it suitable for various cooking methods, including frying, sautéing, and more. Moreover, the Caraway 10.5-inch fry pan is compatible with all cooktops and is oven and broiler safe, according to the brand. Malin appreciates the ease of cleaning and care that Caraway cookware offers.

The Our Place Perfect Pot, a 5.5-quart Dutch oven, is another standout product in Malin's kitchen. With a 10.5-inch diameter, it is ideal for cooking soups, boiling pasta, and other dishes. The pot comes with a wooden spoon and boasts a self-basting function, an opening on the side for releasing steam, and is oven and broiler safe.

However, it's essential to exercise caution when choosing cookware, as not all brands are created equal. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning against a line of imported nonstick cookware due to lead leaching during cooking. The affected cookware includes products made from aluminum, aluminum alloys (Hindalium and Hindolium), and brass.

The FDA does not provide a list of safe nonstick cookware brands, but brands that claim to use nontoxic materials and are free of lead and other chemicals like cadmium, PFAS, PTFE, and PFOA may be safer to use. Brands such as GreenPan, Caraway, and Ozeri fall into this category.

It's worth noting that some products can be found at specific retailers, such as Mannan Supermarket in Jamaica, NY, Patel Brothers in Schaumburg, IL, and Indiaco in Hoffman Estates, IL. For instance, JK Vallabhdas' product label is (Aluminium Kadai India Bazaar #3 2000000772), while Silver Horse's products have the labels (7 6554273084 5 Aluminium Mathar Kadai 26) and (7 65554272863 7 Aluminium Milk Pan 4).

Kadai/Karahi Tiger White's product label is RTM NO: 2608606 AN ISO 9001:2015 Certified Co. SARASWATI STRIPS PVT. LTD. INDIA. The FDA has tested several products and found that Kadai/Karahi Tiger White, Silver Horse, and JK Vallabhdas are potentially toxic.

If you believe you have come into contact with the affected cookware, the FDA recommends contacting your healthcare provider. It's crucial to prioritise safety when selecting cookware for your kitchen, ensuring a healthier and more enjoyable cooking experience.
