Fatal illness diagnosis leads husband to organize a family vacation, but life-altering accident ensues

David Hayes, a 42-year-old father of two, has shown remarkable progress since suffering a spinal cord injury on July 11, 2023. The accident occurred while he was swimming with his children in the sea. After nearly three weeks in an induced coma in a Spanish hospital, David was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, England.

David has made significant strides in his recovery. He can breathe on his own for extended periods without a ventilator, although his respiratory function remains weakened. He has also gradually adapted to transfers in a wheelchair and can sit for 15 minutes. David has set a personal goal to increase his tolerance to sitting in a wheelchair to 30 minutes.

The family is raising funds to support David, Elly, and their two children as they cope with this tragic and incomprehensible situation. The funds raised will be used to continue David's rehabilitation, adapt his home, or invest in state-of-the-art mobility technologies. As of August 31, 2025, the fundraising campaign has raised $45,340 through 698 donations.

David's wife, Elly, has been a pillar of strength throughout this challenging time. While undergoing radiation therapy, she has been caring for their children, visiting David daily at the hospital, managing their businesses, and handling administrative tasks.

David has been referred to the Spinal Treatment Center in Salisbury for specialized rehabilitation. He is currently on the waiting list to be transferred there. The rehabilitation, home adaptations, and mobility technologies required for David are extensive and will be a lifelong commitment.

Despite the severity of his condition, David's progress is a testament to his resilience and determination. The family is grateful for the support they have received and continues to seek donations to help them navigate this difficult journey.
