Gold Medalist Mascha Departs from Forest Lake's Bear Realm - Farewell to Mascha the Brown Bear at Bärenwald Müritz

In a heartfelt announcement, Tom Beer, head animal caretaker at the Bear Forest Müritz, a bear protection centre in Stuer, Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district, expressed sadness over the passing of Mascha, a 20-year-old brown bear who had called the sanctuary home for nearly two decades.

Originally from a private holding in East Germany, Mascha's previous living conditions were far from ideal. She was kept in a small concrete enclosure with bars, a setup that was not suitable for a bear's natural habitat or conducive to bear welfare.

Upon her arrival at the Bear Forest Müritz, Mascha was treated with medication and well cared for by the centre's team, in collaboration with Julia Bohner, a veterinarian at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW). Her health issues, which included a heart condition and arthritis, were managed as best as possible.

The Bear Forest Müritz, a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing bears from poor conditions, provided Mascha with a new home that more closely resembled her natural habitat. The centre is home to numerous brown bears that have been rescued from similar circumstances.

The process of releasing aged brown bears like Mascha at the Bear Forest Müritz is carefully managed to ensure their well-being and smooth transition into a naturalistic environment. Bears are introduced into large, spacious forest enclosures, where they have access to essential enrichment such as pools, lush greenery, and plenty of space to roam freely.

The release process is gradual and stress-minimized, allowing bears to settle in and adapt at their own pace. They are provided with stimuli like treats and enrichment activities to encourage natural behaviours and ensure physical and mental health.

Though specific detailed steps regarding Mascha's release are not available, the general approach at the Bear Sanctuary Müritz emphasizes a gentle, patient release into a secure, enriched environment that supports the bears’ physical recovery and psychological comfort after rescue or captivity.

Despite the care and attention she received, Mascha's condition deteriorated significantly in early summer. She was sedated due to her age-related health problems, and the difficult decision was made to let her go.

Mascha's passing serves as a reminder of the importance of bear protection centres like the Bear Forest Müritz, which strive to provide a better life for rescued bears like her. Her memory will live on, not just within the sanctuary, but in the hearts of those who worked tirelessly to give her a life free from suffering.
