** tomsk, sept 6 - RIA Tomsk**
In a twist of events, Tomsk regional authorities plan to preserve the WWI-era frescoes discovered during maintenance at Tomsk Poliklinika No. 1, causing the completion of repairs to be pushed back to the second half of 2025, according to press secretary of the regional administration Elena Peretyagina.
Earlier reports mentioned that the repair work on the historic building of Poliklinika No. 1 in Tomsk began on September 1, 2023, with an estimated cost of 202 million rubles. During the work, contractor OOO "SKIT-93" discovered inscriptions, suspected to be fragments of the "Short Regulations for Soldiers" of 1912, amongst other things. The repair project was originally due for completion by the end of 2024.
"During the repair of a cultural heritage object, frescoes from the WWI era were discovered. They need to be preserved for history, hence we've decided to select a special lacquer that's durable against sanitization procedures conducted within the healthcare facility... The unique characteristics of the building also affected the pace of the work. The completion of the capital repair is now planned for the second half of 2025," Peretyagina is quoted.
At the Frontlines: Life in Tomsk during WWIIn the refurbished spaces of Poliklinika No. 1, a polyclinic division and the Oncology Outpatient Clinic will be housed. The latter is being established as a structural unit of the medical organization to provide primary specialized medical-sanitary assistance. Its primary objectives will include diagnosing and treating oncology patients.
According to head of the regional health department, Robert Fidarov,
"Historical records show Tomsk played a vital role during WWI, providing medical care to wounded soldiers. The city's economy was also affected due to the diversion of resources to support the war effort, leading to economic strain and shortages."
As for the implications of the discovered frescoes, without specific information, their relevance to the impact of WWI on Tomsk remains unclear. Frescoes are often used to depict historical events or themes, but without more context, their significance remains unknown.
For insights into the impact of WWI on Tomsk or the meaning of the frescoes, further research on local historical records or studies specific to Tomsk during that era would be necessary.
