The Museum of Sex, a cult institution in New York for 22 years, has opened a second home in Miami, marking a significant expansion for the museum. The Miami location, which opened in October 2024, is housed in a converted 32,000 sq ft warehouse designed by the internationally acclaimed architecture firm, Snøhetta.

The New York Museum of Sex, designed by SHoP Architects, has been a staple in the city's cultural landscape for over two decades. It has launched over 40 exhibitions committed to presenting and celebrating different shades of human sexuality. The Miami iteration of the museum continues this tradition, with its inaugural exhibition spotlighting Hajime Sorayama, a Japanese artist known for his detailed portrayals of feminine robots.

Sorayama's first solo show in the US is being held at the Miami Museum of Sex, featuring four large-scale 'sexy robot' sculptures. The exhibition galleries in the Miami museum house over 20,000 artefacts and artworks in its permanent collection. One of the highlights is the otherworldly triptych by Hajime Sorayama, measuring 14ft high, which is part of the 'Super Funland' exhibition.

'Super Funland: Journey into the Erotic Carnival' has been entertaining New York visitors since 2019, and it has found a new home in Miami. This immersive installation inspired by the eroticism of the carnival features 20 sex-themed amusements and games.

The Miami Museum of Sex is also hosting a retrospective exhibition titled 'Modern Sex: 100 Years of Design and Decency'. This exhibition showcases over 500 artefacts, historical media, and medical objects related to sexual health campaigns from the 1920s to today. 'Modern Sex' explores the impact of historical sexual health campaigns, from the 'roaring twenties' to the sexual counterculture of the 1960s and 70s.

Controversial Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki has been featured in exhibitions at both the New York and Miami Museums of Sex. In 2018, Araki's work was on display at the New York Museum of Sex, and in Miami, his work is part of the museum's permanent collection.

Dutch studio Droog set up a show at the New York Museum of Sex in 2015, showcasing their unique take on design and sexuality. The Miami Museum of Sex continues to attract diverse and thought-provoking exhibitions, solidifying its place as a cultural hub in the Allapattah district, close to the Miami Design District.

The Museum of Sex in Miami promises to continue the legacy of its New York counterpart, providing a platform for art, history, and controversy to coexist and challenge perceptions of human sexuality.
