Both animals exhibited similar symptoms, with Kibara showing signs of lethargy, reduced appetite, and receiving intensive veterinary care. Despite best efforts, Kibara remained unresponsive during a full anesthesia examination, failing to wake up.
Prof. Jörg Junhold, the zoo director, expressed the team's grief in an official statement, articulating their shock and sorrow at this unprecedented double loss since Pongoland's establishment. Postmortem examinations continue for Kio, while veterinarians suspect an inflammation in Kibara’s digestive area.
