Emergency Responses in Larimer County: Local Teams Aid Struggling Hikers Three Times in a Single Day

In a remarkable display of coordination and dedication, Larimer County Search and Rescue (LCSAR) successfully carried out three emergency rescue operations simultaneously on July 10th, 2023, in Larimer County, Colorado.

The day began with a hiker experiencing a medical emergency near Crosier Mountain. A multi-agency team, including the Loveland Fire Rescue Authority, Estes Valley Fire Protection District, Larimer County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) Emergency Services, Phantom Canyon fire crew, the U.S. Forest Service, and Thompson Valley EMS, responded to the scene.

Later in the day, LCSO Emergency Services, Larimer County Search and Rescue, Inc. (LCSAR), and UCHealth's Special Operations Rescue Team were called to attend to a second emergency at the top of the Greyrock Trail. A hiker had fallen and slid nearly 100 feet down a rock face. Meanwhile, a fisherman experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion and altitude sickness was found near Corral Creek.

LCSAR, a vital part of LCSO operations, specializes in locating and assisting individuals lost or in distress in the region. Their role includes searching for missing persons, rescuing hikers or outdoor enthusiasts in danger, and responding to various emergency situations in rugged or difficult terrain.

The team operates as a volunteer-based team with certified members trained to handle complex rescue operations including wilderness searches, technical rescues, and dive rescues. Their collaborative efforts with other local agencies such as Colorado Parks and Wildlife further enhance their operational effectiveness.

In the incidents on July 10th, LCSO personnel and LCSAR volunteers reached the patients on foot, administered care, and assisted them in navigating the rugged terrain back to the trailhead. The hiker from the first emergency was able to walk out with the team's help, reaching the trailhead around 9:50 p.m. The patient from the second emergency was airlifted by a UCHealth LifeLine helicopter to an area hospital.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office did not provide updates on the conditions or current locations of the patients from the earlier emergency incidents. They also did not specify which specific volunteer organizations responded to the recent emergency incidents beyond LCSAR and Larimer Dive Rescue.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office did not mention any new rescue operations that were aided by the UCHealth LifeLine helicopter. They also did not provide information about any new emergency incidents that occurred after the ones mentioned earlier.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office did not mention any specific costs associated with the recent emergency rescue operations. Medical transport or hospital services may still incur costs, but public agencies and dedicated volunteers support the rescue efforts themselves.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office expressed their gratitude to all who stepped up during a busy day to ensure everyone made it home safely. They encourage people to visit larimersar.org for more information about search and rescue services or to learn about supporting local teams. Dispatchers used RapidSOS technology to pinpoint the hiker's location.
