In a shocking turn of events, a catastrophic fire ripped through St. Mary's Hospital in Hamburg, leaving three elderly patients dead and over 50 people injured. An arrest has been made as investigators suspect arson as the cause.

Chaotic Rescue Efforts

Upon arrival, firefighters faced a grim tableau, with several geriatric patients calling for help from the windows. The fire originated from a room on the ground floor, quickly spreading up the facade to the floor above and affecting the neurological ward. Tragically, three men aged 84, 85, and 87 were unable to escape the flames and perished. Another patient sustained severe injuries.

Rescue operations were arduous, with elderly patients in wheelchairs being led through the smoky corridors donning escape hoods. Patients who could walk were evacuated via an aerial ladder or portable ladders. One rescued individual shared their harrowing experience: "We were taken to the emergency room. Those who could walk had to walk. The others were pushed. It all happened rapidly and quite orderly."

Invisibility Battle

The thick smoke and steam hindered rescue efforts, making visibility virtually impossible for firefighters. Some patients had to be left in their rooms initially due to the smoky corridors' dangerous conditions. Despite their lights, rescuers found it near impossible to navigate the facility.

The fire department was alerted around 1:23 am. Upon arrival, they dispatched reinforcements, resulting in four fire engines with 160 firefighters in operation. Additional aid organizations joined the rescue effort, swelling their numbers to 220 deployment forces. The fire was extinguished approximately 20 minutes after its onset.

Unreachable Victims

Despite the fire being contained on the ground floor, rescuers struggled to reach those calling for help from outside the building. The lower floor windows were set in a ditch, forcing fully-geared firefighters to climb about 2.50 meters high to reach a window, as reported by the police. The windows, crafted from plastic, were melted in the fire source and its vicinity.

Arson Investigation

The arson investigation, undertaken by the state criminal police, is currently underway. Despite their presence within the charred room in the morning, the police cannot yet speculate about the origin of the fire. Witnesses will be questioned extensively, but investigators expect no significant updates until further notice.

St. Mary's Hospital, a Catholic facility in the Hohenfelde district, treats around 93,000 patients annually and has approximately 600 beds. The majority of the injured were taken to the clinic's central emergency room, with only two patients transferring to neighboring hospitals. A crisis intervention team cares for the affected facility staff.

Suspect in Custody

A 72-year-old patient was apprehended by the police at the hospital and is being held as a prime suspect. The police are still examining evidence to support the arson allegations and have set a court hearing for the suspect in the near future.
