Elderly individuals succumb to electrical malfunction in Omsk region
Headline: Two Fatal Electrical Fires in Omsk Region Highlight Importance of Electrical Safety
In the past week, the Omsk region has been shaken by two tragic incidents involving fatal fires caused by faulty electrical equipment. On July 20, a dacha in the SNT "Lace Maker" burned down, resulting in a death, and on August 2, a private house in the village of Alexeyevsky, Gorokhovsky district, caught fire, claiming another life. Both victims were pensioners.
The Investigative Committee of the Omsk region reported these incidents on August 4, emphasizing the importance of checking the condition of electrical wiring and household appliances. The fires occurred in separate locations within the region and were caused specifically by faulty electrical wiring.
To prevent such tragedies, it is essential to follow safety measures for maintaining safe electrical systems. Here are some precautions to consider:
- Replace outdated wiring: Older electrical wiring, especially in homes over 20 years old, can overheat and cause fires. A qualified electrician should inspect and possibly replace old wiring to meet current safety standards.
- Use properly rated and intact extension cords and outlets: Avoid overloading extension cords, never connect multiple power strips in series, and use only cords with proper certification marks like CE, GS, VDE, or TÜV.
- Avoid covering power strips or outlets: Keep sockets and cords visible and free from carpets or furniture to prevent heat buildup.
- Regularly inspect electrical components: Check cables, plugs, sockets, and light fixtures for damage, fraying, scorching, or signs of wear, and replace or repair as needed.
- Never overload circuits: Do not plug too many high-power devices into one outlet or extension cord to avoid overheating and short circuits.
- Turn off and unplug appliances when not in use: This reduces electrical load and fire risk, and allows for easier detection of appliance problems.
- Keep electrical wiring away from hot or wet surfaces: Moisture and heat can degrade insulation and cause shorts or fires.
- Use qualified electricians for inspections and repairs: To ensure electrical work is safe and up to code.
- Install safety devices: Early warning smoke detectors, temperature-triggered shutoffs, and circuit breakers can help prevent fires or alert occupants quickly.
- Avoid misuse of heating devices: Space heaters and other portable heaters are common fire starters when used improperly; follow manufacturer guidelines and never leave them unattended.
- Have appropriate fire extinguishers and a fire response plan: Use CO₂, dry powder, or foam extinguishers rated for electrical fires, and know how to quickly disconnect power in an emergency.
By following these precautions, we can significantly reduce the risk of electrical fires caused by faulty wiring. Investigations are ongoing for both the Alexeyevsky and SNT "Lace Maker" incidents. As a reminder, adherence to fire safety rules is advised when using electrical appliances. Stay safe, Omsk.
