In Heidelberg University Hospital, a 59-year-old man named Harald underwent a life-changing heart operation seven years ago. Prior to his health issues, Harald led a lifestyle typical of many, with a history of being overweight, a chain smoker, and a meat eater. This lifestyle, however, took a turn when Harald suffered his first heart attack at the age of 31.

Seven years ago, Harald's heart performance was a concerning 34 percent. Despite the risks, Harald has chosen not to have a defibrillator implanted due to fears of false triggers during sports or driving. Dr. Jan Beckendorf, Harald's cardiologist, strongly advises regular long-term ECG monitoring for Harald, but a defibrillator is currently not absolutely necessary, according to Dr. Beckendorf.

During the heart surgery, Harald had to be revived. Two bypasses were inserted during the operation. Despite these challenges, Harald has shown remarkable resilience. He is fully employed and runs a software development company, a business consultancy, and an institute for psychological safety in work teams.

Harald's heart performance is now down to 17 percent, a level equivalent to that of a 90-year-old. Despite this, Harald is aware that he could die at any moment. His wife, Kathy, stands by his side throughout this challenging journey.

In 2019, the doctors recommended the implantation of a defibrillator with a CRT system, a recommendation Harald has yet to accept due to his concerns about false triggers. Dr. Beckendorf continues to monitor Harald's condition closely, advocating for the best possible care for this remarkable individual.

Harald's story serves as a reminder of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the challenges that can arise when it is neglected. Despite his health struggles, Harald continues to push forward, demonstrating the power of human spirit and resilience.
