So, what's the bigger picture here? Well, the doctor in question has already been charged with 15 counts of murder, but the Public Prosecutor's Office is far from done. They're currently taking a hard look at 75 additional cases, and an exact trial date at the Berlin Regional Court hasn't been set yet.
The German doc is accused of going rogue while working for a care service in Berlin. And here's the deal: the indictment suggests that, without any valid medical reasons and without the knowledge or consent of his victims, he administered a lethal blend of medications to 12 women and 3 men. The youngest victim on the list is only 25 years old, while the eldest is a 94-year-old woman. The current exhumation involves a man who passed away in July 2022, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office.
The case has been handed to a special investigation group from the homicide department of the Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA). So far, they've scoured through hundreds of patient files from the doctor, and tips from numerous care services have played a role too.
