Doctor Imprisoned for Child Abuse: Lengthy Sentence Granted for Multiple Cases of Child Neglect and Abuse
In Western France, Retired Surgeon Sentenced to Maximum Term for Child Abuse
A court in Vannes, France, has convicted a former surgeon, Joel Le Scouarnec, to the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for sexually abusing 299 patients, most of whom were minors. Over a period of nearly three decades, Le Scouarnec, now 74, admitted to abusing 158 male and 141 female patients, with the average age of his victims being 11 years old.
The abuses occurred in various settings, including operating rooms, during anesthesia, and in patient rooms. The crimes came to light in 2017 when a neighbor reported that her six-year-old daughter was sexually abused by Le Scouarnec in a garden. Investigators later uncovered around 300,000 child abuse photographs and detailed diaries outlining Le Scouarnec's decades-long abuse.
The prosecution had demanded the maximum 20-year sentence, stating that Le Scouarnec treated his victims simply as objects, showing no empathy and exploiting his role as a doctor. Many of his victims were still under anesthesia or were children who could not understand the abuse at the time.
Victims of Le Scouarnec have criticized the authorities for failing to stop him. One victim, a 36-year-old, expressed her concern in court, "How could Doctor Scouarnec practice for 30 years, how could they let him continue, why didn't anyone know?"
France's medical association acknowledged its failure in the case. Despite a previous conviction for downloading child sexual abuse images in 2005, Le Scouarnec was allowed to continue practicing medicine until his arrest in 2017. This trial has sparked widespread questioning about the lack of action by health authorities in preventing such abuse.
Le Scouarnec has already served a 15-year prison sentence for the rape and sexual assault of four minors in 2020. It is likely that there will be another trial for the unaccounted victims.
