Doctor Advises Against Consuming Skewered Meat with Sweet, Carbonated Alcoholic Drinks

Steer Clear of Sugary, Fizzy Drinks when Savoring Shashlik

Doctor advises beverages to avoid at a barbecue.

Taking care of your health while enjoying a meal is crucial. Notably, the choice of drinks alongside shashlik, a popular skewered meat dish, matters significantly. In an interview with "Lenta.ru", endocrinologist Galina Smirnova identified the pitfalls of popular drink combinations with shashlik.

For instance, the doctor advises against consuming shashlik with sparkling and sweet alcoholic beverages, such as beer, champagne, and sugary cocktails. Here's why: The carbonic acid in these drinks speeds up alcohol absorption, leading to quick intoxication and body intoxication, while sugar increases the drink's caloric content.

Beer contains a hefty dose of carbs, and one bottle packs a punch equivalent to a bread serving in terms of calories. Champagne and sparkling wines, on the other hand, double the trouble due to the combination of bubbles and sugar.

When paired with shashlik, these drinks put additional strain on the stomach. Given that the body must simultaneously digest heavy protein-fat food and neutralize alcohol, it becomes challenging for enzymes to execute their jobs effectively. This slows down the digestion process, resulting in discomfort and a feeling of heaviness in the stomach.

The liver has to exert more energy to break down alcohol while the fats and carbs from food remain undigested, which can affect the pancreas' functioning, the doctor noted. To mitigate these risks, it's wise to consume such combinations in moderation, hydrate with water, and include nutrient-rich foods in your diet.

Insider Info: Consuming shashlik with sparkling and sweet alcoholic beverages can lead to several health issues, including increased calorie intake, nutrient imbalance, potential liver strain, impact on blood pressure and cholesterol, digestive issues, and even dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. It's advisable to limit such combinations and stay hydrated. Balancing your diet with nutrient-rich foods can help minimize potential health risks.

In line with the expert's advice, it's essential to be cautious about the drink pairings with shashlik when aiming for better health. Opting for beverages with science-backed nutrition and health-and-wellness benefits, such as water, could potentially lead to a more balanced meal, rather than choosing sweetened carbonated drinks that might impact your overall nutrition.
