Discrimination against wheelchair users at Salzwedel station revealed

Regional traffic will be completely suspended during the renovation, and the detour via Uelzen will result in an additional hour of travel time. Katrin Wisniewski, a local resident, has plans to take a taxi to the neighbouring village of Pretzier, which has a barrier-free railway halt, in case of need during the ICE diversion.
The disability commissioners of the Altmarkkreis and the city have expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of response and action from Deutsche Bahn regarding the accessibility issues at the Salzwedel station. The construction site has also been affected by vandalism and theft, causing further delays.
The repair of the elevators is not expected to be completed until September 2025. The work to replace the elevators was initially scheduled to begin in mid-January 2025, but was delayed due to infiltrating moisture.
Meanwhile, a new federal authority for accessibility is being established in Magdeburg. While this is an important step, it has been criticised for not being thought through in certain aspects. The Barrier-Free Strengthening Act, aimed at improving accessibility for visually impaired people, has also been criticised for leaving out crucial areas of life.
