Discovered Bomb: Emergency responders from Klingenstadt joined evacuation efforts in Essen
In the heart of Germany, the city of Essen finds itself in an unexpected situation. Construction work in the Essen-Rüttenscheid district uncovered a World War II unexploded ordnance (UXO) on Monday, prompting immediate action.
The Essen fire department requested support for the operation, and a pre-planned system at the regional government level is now in operation. The Solingen forces, a combination of the aid organizations Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB), Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (DRK), Malteser-Hilfs-Dienst (MHD), and the Solingen fire department, are being deployed to handle the patient transport after the disposal.
The "Giradet-Haus", a facility housing a station for severely ill children, is located within the evacuation zone for the duration of the disposal. Some of the children in the "Giradet-Haus" are on ventilators, making evacuation a more complex task.
Normally, this system is controlled via the Essen fire department's control center. However, since it is also affected by the event, the Düsseldorf fire department is coordinating in this instance.
The Solingen/Wuppertal fire department has deployed a Patient Transport Train (PTZ-10) for the bomb disposal operation in Essen. It consists of four ambulance vehicles (RTW), four patient transport vehicles (KTW), one emergency doctor vehicle (NEF), and a command vehicle (ELW). Another PTZ-10 from Wuppertal has been operating in Essen since the early morning hours. Each PTZ-10 can transport up to 10 patients.
Around 150 people from the affected area required assistance from qualified personnel from the emergency services. The disposal was prepared for Tuesday, and approximately 3,000 residents from the affected area also needed to be evacuated.
Given Essen’s extensive bombing during World War II, particularly during the Battle of the Ruhr where thousands of bombs were dropped and large areas were devastated, it is plausible that UXO from that period could still be found there. Typical procedures for such discoveries include evacuation of residents within a defined safety radius around the bomb site, deployment of specialized bomb disposal units, coordination between local police, fire departments, health services, and civil protection authorities, public communication, and possibly, coordination with military experts for highly complex ordnance.
If you need current specific evacuation or emergency response details for recent events, consulting local German news portals or official municipal emergency services would provide the most accurate information. The Wuppertal forces are not involved in the patient transport after the disposal.
