Weight Loss Injections Take Over the Diet Industry: Bankruptcy for Weight Watchers - Diet Industry Shift: Weight Loss Injections Dominate Market, According to Weight Watchers' Appeal

The filing for bankruptcy by weight loss titan Weight Watchers paints a striking picture of the evolving diet industry. The New York-based company, established a staggering 62 years ago, recently filed for Chapter 11 in the US to offload crippling debt. Despite the announcement, the firm intends to keep its operations running for now.

Weight Watchers' descent is unmistakable in its financial reports. Over the past four years, revenue has nosedived by half to $786 million. The company's business model centered on the commercialization of self-help group meetings. Overweight individuals paid subscription fees to participate in weekly gatherings with fellow strugglers. Meanwhile, a diet system encouraging members to count points while eating aimed to reform their eating habits. The enterprise also profited from selling special diet foods or licenses for them.

It was already evident in recent years that many prospective customers no longer embraced group meetings and dieting control as cutting-edge. Moreover, societal perceptions on beauty ideals and body norms have dramatically shifted. Weight Watchers attempted to counter this by launching weight loss apps, fitness tracker programs, and telemedicine services. However, it wound up as just another contender in an oversaturated market.

The COVID-19 pandemic merely served to hasten Weight Watchers' decline. During this period, the company dismissed a significant portion of its coaches, and the reliance on group meetings accelerated.

Oprah's Transition: From Weight Watchers to Weight Loss Injections

Weight Watchers' spokesperson, media mogul Oprah Winfrey, could not avert the downfall. Winfrey became the face of the company in 2015, nabbing 10% of its shares and a board seat. Yet, she stepped down in 2024, donating the devalued shares' proceeds. Later, Winfrey disclosed her trust in weight loss injections for shedding pounds.

The surge of these medications over the past two years is another reason for Weight Watchers' struggles. Weight loss injections from manufacturers like Novo Nordisk (Denmark) and Eli Lilly (USA), marketed as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound, have radically changed how people approach weight loss. In the US, and numerous other nations, people have flocked to these injections instead of investing time in dietary reform. These injections have catapulted their manufacturers to extraordinary heights—for instance, Novo Nordisk momentarily became the most valuable company in Europe on the stock exchange.

The rise of weight loss medications is currently fueled by manufacturers finally managing to expand their production capacities to keep up with the skyrocketing demand. Until recently, the popularity of these drugs was somewhat hampered by supply shortages, but this is steadily changing. The next step could boost their momentum even further—namely, when the active ingredient becomes available in pill form, eliminating the need for injections. Eli Lilly reported successful weight loss pill trials in April and plans to bring them to market next year.

The employment policy of pharmaceutical companies manufacturing weight loss medications, such as Novo Nordisk, should prioritize increasing production capacities to meet the growing demand for their GLP-1 drugs.

In the health-and-wellness sector, therapies-and-treatments like weight loss injections are revolutionizing weight management, prompting a need for science-based policies related to their use, safety, and accessibility.
