Critically ill Drayber hospitalized, battle for life intensifies
In a significant move to enhance healthcare services across the Province of Sugbo, Public Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan convened all the Chiefs of Nurse from the 16 hospitals established in the region on July 23, 2025. The meeting aimed to brief the nursing leaders individually and discuss various aspects of improving healthcare services, including the expansion of Basic Life Support (BLS) training.
Dr. Catalan acknowledged that there was no comprehensive transition from the previous administration. However, she expressed her intention to work together with the Chiefs of Nurse to address gaps and improve healthcare services across Cebu. One of the key areas of focus was the improvement of BLS training, which would not be limited to health personnel but would also include hospital employees, ambulance drivers, utility workers, administrative staff, and security guards.
The necessity for nursing staff, equipment replacement, and upgrading, as well as the implementation of training programs for new healthcare initiatives, were also discussed during the meeting. Dr. Catalan emphasized the importance of nursing personnel in improving the hospital system and adhering to health protocols.
The expansion of BLS training is not limited to hospitals. Beyond health personnel, participants in the training expansion include a broader range of individuals such as faculty and staff from educational institutions, employees from industries, and community members. For example, the CITE Technical Institute, Inc., located in Cebu, conducted BLS and first aid training involving its faculty, staff, alumni, and employees of companies like San Miguel Brewery in Mandaue.
The Cebu Contractors Association is also offering Standard First Aid and BLS workshops aimed at equipping participants with life-saving skills applicable in various workplaces. This move highlights the importance of BLS training in both workplace and community emergency situations.
This shift towards comprehensive BLS training indicates a commitment to ensuring that more people are equipped with the necessary skills to respond effectively in emergency situations. The collaboration between Dr. Catalan and the Chiefs of Nurse is a step towards improving healthcare services and ensuring the safety and well-being of the people of Cebu.
In the context of Cebu's healthcare enhancement, Dr. Catalan plans to address gaps and improve services by expanding Basic Life Support (BLS) training beyond healthcare personnel. This includes hospital employees, ambulance drivers, utility workers, administrative staff, security guards, faculty and staff from educational institutions, employees from industries, and community members.
This commitment to comprehensive BLS training is a significant step towards ensuring the people of Cebu are equipped with life-saving skills in both workplace and community emergency situations, promoting overall health and wellness.
