Covid-19 Fatality in Chandigarh: A 40-year-old individual succumbs to the coronavirus in the city.

Chandigarh: A 40-year-old male patient, who tested positive for Covid-19, passed away on Wednesday at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). This marks the first Covid-related death reported in a health facility in the city.

As of now, officials have not confirmed whether the patient was infected with the JN.1 variant, which is currently the most dominant strain of COVID-19 in India, according to recent data. The patient was initially from Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh and had been referred to GMCH from Ludhiana after his positive test result.

The patient's data had been entered in the required format, and he was isolated in the Covid area, where two ventilators were set up, as stated by Dr. Ashok Atri, the hospital's Director. He emphasized that there is currently no need to worry.

Punjab recorded its first Covid-19 case two days ago, with a 51-year-old woman from Haryana's Yamunanagar testing positive at Fortis Hospital in Mohali. In Haryana, there are currently four active Covid-19 cases, with two each in Gurugram and Faridabad. None of the infected individuals have a travel history, and all have mild symptoms, according to state Health Minister Arti Singh Rao.

Meanwhile, in Bihar’s capital, AIIMS-Patna is dealing with six new Covid-19 infections. Among those infected are a female doctor, a nurse, and another AIIMS employee, who are currently receiving treatment under the supervision of senior doctors. Two additional patients at Nalanda Medical College Hospital (NMCH) have also tested positive, along with a 42-year-old man from the RPS Mod area.

The city currently has nine active Covid-19 cases, according to Civil Surgeon Dr. Avinash Kumar Singh. In response, hospitals are prepared for a possible rise in cases.

Outside Bihar, Rajasthan reported nine new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the state's total to 32 cases this year. Seven cases were from Jaipur, and two were from AIIMS Jodhpur.

Separately, the Uttar Pradesh government announced that over 2,800 employees who worked during earlier Covid waves would now be retained in permanent service amid the current surge in Covid-19 cases. The rising infections are largely attributed to a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant.
