County aims to acquire control over Uckermark clinics
County of Uckermark Takes Charge of Hospitals in Prenzlau and Angermünde
Fed up with the ongoing struggles of providing comprehensive medical care for its residents, the County of Uckermark has decided to take matters into its own hands, managing the hospitals in Prenzlau and Angermünde moving forward. Currently under the care of Gesellschaft für Leben und Gesundheit (GLG), the County has found it impossible to meet the healthcare needs of its people, leading to this drastic decision.
County Steps Up
The hospitals in Prenzlau and Angermünde are teetering on the brink of financial disaster. An insolvency was narrowly avoided with the help of a hefty two-million-euro contribution from the County. GLG had planned to implement cost-cutting measures, including reducing the number of stationary beds, According to County Administration officials, the current state of affairs is concerning and the County fears that medical care may suffer if the situation remains unchanged.
To break free from GLG, the County plans to sell its shares and withdraw its contributed shares from the company. The County Council's resolution will set the wheels in motion for the necessary preparations.
A Broken Trust
County Commissioner Karina Dörk (CDU) has expressed dissatisfaction with GLG, citing numerous doctors leaving the hospitals after the restructuring plan was announced. Dörk believes the plan is unfeasible and that GLG has lost the trust of the County.
GLG Hits Back
GLG has denied these accusations, claiming that their economic plan doesn't foresee any structural changes, and that the existing medical services will be maintained according to the decision of the supervisory board. The management has chosen to stay out of the political fray.
A third-party agency has been commissioned to investigate potential future-proof supply models for the region, which should take approximately two months. Once the findings are in, the shareholders and the supervisory board will make their decisions. Until then, GLG will move forward with the approved economic plan from April 28.
A Wider Problem
The County of Uckermark's predicament is all too familiar in Brandenburg, where many hospitals are battling financial struggles. Pressure is mounting for the regional and federal governments to come up with viable solutions to support these essential rural healthcare institutions.
The Road Ahead
The immediate plan for Prenzlau and Angermünde is to implement rehabilitation and restructuring measures with robust financial backing, their ultimate goal being to secure the hospitals’ long-term future. However, the County’s success depends on continued support from the federal and regional governments and seamless management transitions.
