Berlin's Governing Mayor Proposes More Flexible Night Flight Ban at BER
Berlin's governing mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU), has called for a more flexible night flight ban at the capital's main airport, BER. The current ban, in place to ensure the sleep of nearby residents and protect public health, affects air traffic, particularly passenger aircraft.
According to a report by RBB, Wegner has suggested negotiating with Brandenburg and the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport company to allow exceptions for minor deviations from the strict night flight ban. These changes are intended to avoid additional costs or detours for airlines and passengers in case of minor delays.
Under the proposed changes, quieter aircraft would be allowed between 10:30 PM and midnight, and from 5:30 AM to 6:00 AM. Regular flights would still be suspended between midnight and 5:00 AM, with only postal, government, surveying, and ambulance flights permitted.
Wegner emphasized the need to avoid additional costs or detours for airlines and passengers in case of minor delays. He suggested that exceptions could be made for minor deviations from the night flight ban. BER's CEO, Aletta von Massenbach, has also supported the idea of a more flexible night flight ban.
However, the Brandenburg state government has rejected calls for more flexibility, citing the need to protect residents. Complaints about the high workload for airlines have been reported due to the current night flight ban, with passenger aircraft often being redirected due to delays of just a few minutes, leading to extra travel time and costs for passengers.
The night flight ban at BER is currently in place, but Wegner is proposing changes to make it more flexible while still protecting residents' nighttime rest between 10:30 PM and 6:00 AM. The CDU (Christian Democratic Union) is the political party of Berlin's governing mayor Kai Wegner.
