Coke's Chlorine Snafu: A European Wave!
Coke is pulling several products from the market
Straight up, Coca-Cola's got a bit of a pickle on its hands. The beverage juggernaut has initiated a massive recall of certain soft drink varieties in several European countries, including Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, and France. But don't go panicking just yet - the risk to consumers is claimed to be low as a snail's crawl.
The issue at hand? Excessive chlorine levels in some of their products, which leads to elevated chlorate content[1][2][3]. Why's that a problem, you ask? Well, chlorate inhibits the absorption of iodine by the thyroid gland[1]. This isn't something you'd want if you've got issues with thyroid function, as it can cause unwanted health effects[2].
Now, the Coca-Cola varieties affected? Fanta, Sprite, Minute Maid, and good ol' Coca-Cola itself[2]. And it's not just a single country feeling the heat - the recall spans cans and glass bottles across all the mentioned nations.
But fear not, if you're in Germany! Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Germany (CCEP DE) throws their hat in the ring to say that none of the affected goods made it to German shelves[2].
So, how do you know if your drink's a dud? Look for the production code on the bottom of the can or on the neck or label of the glass bottle. The codes in question fall between 328 GE and 338 GE[2].
