Clinic Update: Unveiling the Inside Story

News Article: Delegation of Routine Tasks Improves Efficiency at Clinic No. 5

At Clinic No. 5, located within City Clinic, a notable shift in primary healthcare delivery is underway. Nurses are now handling a variety of new tasks within their scope of competence, leading to several benefits for both patients and healthcare providers.

Clinic Director Altynshash Tabuldina has confirmed that routine functions are being delegated to mid-level medical staff. This decision has resulted in a significant increase in the number of patients that family doctors and nurses can see. The percentage of patients seen by family doctors and nurses has risen to 51%, up from the previous 36%. This means that up to 24 patients per day can now be seen by a family doctor, an increase from the previous 16 patients.

The changes at Clinic No. 5 have also led to a decrease in 4th category emergency calls. Nurses are managing initial patient intake, organizing and managing nursing consultations, and even prescribing medications. These roles free up family doctors to focus on more complex cases, potentially reducing burnout and improving their overall well-being.

The increased efficiency at Clinic No. 5 doesn't come at the expense of patient care. Patients still have access to test results when they see a specialist, ensuring that their care remains comprehensive. Additionally, the duration of a family doctor's appointment has been increased to 6 hours, providing more time for complex cases.

One area where the changes have had a significant impact is the reduction in home visits by medical staff. Home visits have decreased by 49.4% as a result of the changes at Clinic No. 5, making it easier for patients to access care within the clinic.

The success of these changes can be attributed to the enhanced team efficiency and patient safety that proper delegation brings. Mid-level staff, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and medical assistants, are integral to medical home teams. This approach supports quality improvement without compromising care standards.

However, it's important to address concerns about delegation. Ensuring mid-level staff have adequate experience and training is crucial to maintain care quality and avoid burdening registered nurses or physicians with oversight anxiety.

In conclusion, the delegation of routine tasks to mid-level staff in primary care settings like Clinic No. 5 improves healthcare delivery efficiency and provider well-being while maintaining or improving patient outcomes, as long as appropriate support and training structures are in place.
