Cats in Dusseldorf undergo forced castration following neutering procedure

In an effort to control the growing cat population and ensure the welfare of these furry creatures, the city of Düsseldorf has enforced a new regulation for the protection of free-roaming cats. The regulation, enforced by the Institute for Consumer Protection and Veterinary Affairs, applies to the entire city area.

Owners of identified cats are required to register their pets with the Consumer Protection Authority of the State Capital Düsseldorf. This registration process includes spaying/neutering, a routine procedure for veterinarians, and identification via microchip or tattoo. Owners must also report any changes or potential deletion of data to maintain accurate records.

The regulation aims to reduce the number of cats, prevent territorial fights, and protect cats from harm and pain. Unneutered outdoor cats face significant stress due to the mating instinct, often roaming for days in search of mates. To control the cat population, female and male cats should be spayed/neutered by the fifth month of age.

The brochure explaining the regulation is available at municipal facilities, veterinary practices, pet stores, and animal shelters. A digital version can also be found at this link. Violations of the cat protection regulation can result in a fine of up to 1,000 euros.

The Cat Protection League appeals to all owners of roaming cats to follow the regulation and have their cats spayed/neutered and identified by a veterinarian. For further information, the Institute for Consumer Protection and Veterinary Affairs can be contacted at 0211-8993242.

It is essential for the health and wellbeing of Düsseldorf's feline population that owners comply with the regulation. By doing so, we can work together to reduce the number of neglected, sick, and infested cats in our city.
