Attacking Incident at Government Hospital: Doctor Suffers Injuries at Hands of Patient's Relatives in Tripura
In the early hours of a Sunday in late July and early August 2025, a shocking incident unfolded at the state-run Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) hospital in Tripura. Dr Litan Das, a dedicated medical professional, was brutally assaulted by two men while he was on duty in the emergency department.
The attackers, identified as attendants of a patient named Bimal Sarkar, physically assaulted Dr Das, pushing and knocking him down. They also verbally abused the attending doctors, creating a chaotic and dangerous environment.
According to reports, Bimal Sarkar had consumed alcohol laced with poison, and the incident took place as a result. The suspects, Tapan Sarkar and Bapan Sarkar, fled the hospital after the incident, and as of the last reports, they have not been arrested.
Dr Shishendu Dhar, head of the emergency department at GBP hospital, provided details about the incident to reporters. He confirmed that Dr Litan Das was injured during the attack and is currently out of danger, according to an official.
The Deputy Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Kanak Chowdhury, lodged a complaint with the police regarding the attack. A formal FIR will be registered by the hospital's Medical Superintendent on Monday.
It is unfortunate to note that private security present during the incident did not take any action against the attackers. The police are taking necessary steps to apprehend the culprits, conducting raids at various locations but have yet to make any arrests.
