Asbestos Awareness Campaign Launched for Renovating Older Buildings in Baden-Württemberg
Environment Minister Thekla Walker and the head of the Handwerkerverband Baden-Württemberg have joined forces to launch a health safety campaign for renovating older structures. The campaign, led by Walker, aims to raise awareness about the risks of asbestos and ensure safe practices during renovations.
The revised Hazardous Substances Ordinance now requires those commissioning work on older buildings to provide information and cooperate with contractors to ensure safety. This is crucial as asbestos, a carcinogenic substance, was commonly used in construction materials until the early 1990s. Many of these structures now require renovation, posing potential risks.
Craft businesses, prioritizing the safety of customers and employees, must be informed about the building's history to determine if asbestos may be present. Walker emphasizes the importance of collaborating with trained professionals and using specialist companies for work on asbestos-containing materials. Even private individuals must comply with regulations.
To sensitize people in Baden-Württemberg to the dangers of asbestos, a brochure has been issued. It provides information on handling asbestos and the risks involved. If asbestos cannot be ruled out, a technical survey with sampling may be required. The campaign, led by Walker, underscores the need for awareness and safe practices during the renovation of older structures.
