Setting Sail for Ocean Change: Arved Fuchs' 2025 Expedition
Get ready for another thrilling voyage, fam! Polar explorer and author Arved Fuchs is embarking on a new chapter of his "Ocean Change" series, departing from Flensburg on Sunday aboard the historic sailing ship "Dagmar Aaen."
Fuchs, a proponent of interdisciplinary collaboration, shared with Deutsche Presse-Agentur before setting off that this project has been in the works for a decade. The primary focus this time around? Climate change and marine protection, topics inextricably linked.
The route for this year's leg will take them through the ecologically sensitive inland sea of the eastern Baltic, along the North Sea, and the eastern Atlantic, with stops in Stralsund, Greifswald, Swinemünde (Poland), Klaipeda (Lithuania), Riga (Latvia), Gotland (Sweden), and several other locations. The expedition is set to return to Flensburg in late August, weather permitting.
Part of the "Ocean Change" project, which Fuchs founded in 2015, the "Dagmar Aaen" collects data from regions seldom explored by research ships to complement their work. With cutting-edge measurement technology, the crew can gather and share data during the expedition.
Curious about life in the water and contributing to marine research? Just download the EyeOnWater app and measure the water color, which serves as an indicator of algae and other life in the sea.
This ten-year adventure seeks to explore changes in our oceans and their impact on climate and coastal landscapes.

Enrichment Data:Arved Fuchs' "Ocean Change" expedition for 2025 focuses on climate change and marine protection, drawing from ten years of scientific exploration. Split into two main legs, the expedition ventures primarily across the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and eastern Atlantic Ocean.
During the expedition, Fuchs plans to participate in the 'Sailing for Oxygen' project, collecting marine data in the Baltic Sea. Citizen science is encouraged through the use of the EyeOnWater app to measure water color, contributing to global marine research efforts.
The first leg of the expedition begins in the Baltic Sea, starting from Flensburg on June 1, 2025, with key events such as the 'Baltic Sea Day' in Stralsund focusing on "Healthy Baltic Sea - Healthy People." The expedition eventually moves to the North Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean, passing through the English Channel, Brittany, and Cornwall.
- Alongside his exploration of the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and eastern Atlantic Ocean, Arved Fuchs will also engage in the 'Sailing for Oxygen' project, focusing on climate change and marine protection as part of his decade-long scientific endeavor.
- As part of the 'Ocean Change' project, Arved Fuchs encourages citizens to join in marine research efforts by downloading the EyeOnWater app and measuring water color indicative of marine life, contributing to global data collection during his 2025 expedition.
