Sailing for Climate Action: Arved Fuchs' "Ocean Change" Voyage 2025

Arved Fuchs Embarks on the "Ocean Change" Journey in the Year 2025 - Arved Fuchs Prepares for 2025 Ocean Change Performance

With a mission to tackle climate change and marine conservation, renowned polar explorer Arved Fuchs set sail on Sunday from Flensburg aboard the traditional sailing ship "Dagmar Aaen". This marked the start of another leg of his project "Ocean Change". According to Fuchs, a lover of cross-disciplinary work, numerous institutions are part of this decade-long initiative.

This year's journey is an educational trek across the eastern Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the eastern Atlantic, and other significant bodies of water. Stops include Stralsund, Greifswald, and Swinemünde (Poland), Klaipeda (Lithuania), Riga (Latvia), Gotland (Sweden), the Kattegat and Skagerrak, Föhr, the English Channel, Brittany, Cornwall, and finally, a return to Flensburg in late August, weather permitting.

Utilizing cutting-edge measurement technology, Fuchs' team can collect valuable data in remote areas typically underserved by research vessels. This data, once collected, is shared with the public for transparency and awareness.

In the battle against climate change, the "Ocean Change" project, founded by Fuchs in 2015, aims to shed light on changes occurring within our oceans and their consequences for the climate and coastal landscapes.

Citizen Science Collaboration

In addition to scientific data collection, citizen participation is a crucial aspect of this year's "Ocean Change" expedition. Through projects such as "Sailing for Oxygen," the team contributes to the broader EyeOnWater initiative by monitoring water color, an essential indicator of life in the water like algae[1][5].

Collaborating Institutions

The expedition collaborates with several institutions such as GEOMAR and Trans-Ocean e.V. via the "Sailing for Oxygen" project, which is part of EyeOnWater[1]. Furthermore, NIBE Systemtechnik GmbH offers financial support and shares the objective of data collection and marine conservation[5].

The "Ocean Change" voyage continues to highlight the significance of collaboration between various organizations in driving scientific research and increasing public awareness of the ocean's ever-changing state.

  1. Arved Fuchs' "Ocean Change" initiative, a decade-long project aimed at combating climate change and marine conservation, collaborates with institutional partners such as GEOMAR, Trans-Ocean e.V., and NIBE Systemtechnik GmbH to collect valuable data on the health-and-wellness of our oceans.
  2. As part of this year's "Ocean Change" expedition, citizen science plays a crucial role with projects like "Sailing for Oxygen" contributing to initiatives like "EyeOnWater" by encouraging public participation in monitoring water color and algae levels, essential indicators of ocean health.
  3. In line with their mission to foster cross-disciplinary work, the "Ocean Change" voyage takes on a holistic approach, incorporating environmental-science, health-and-wellness, and climate-change elements while promoting the importance of science, policy, and collaborative action in preserving our oceans and mitigating climate change.
