Polar explorer Arved Fuchs has set sail on another leg of his mission, "Ocean Change", aboard his historical sailing vessel, the "Dagmar Aaen". Fuchs is on a quest to scrutinize the impacts of climate change and marine preservation. "For a decade, we've been working tirelessly on this project," Fuchs shared with the German Press Agency before departure. This year's voyage takes him through the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and the eastern Atlantic.

His journey started from Flensburg on Sunday, aiming to explore the sensitive inland sea ecologically, the North Sea, and the Atlantic. Fuchs will stopover at Stralsund, Greifswald, and Świnoujście (Poland), continuing on to Klaipėda (Lithuania) and Riga (Latvia). After passing the Swedish island of Gotland and sailing through the Kattegat and Skagerrak, he will visit the island of Föhr before navigating through the English Channel towards Brittany and Cornwall. The expected return is in late August, weather conditions permitting.

The "Dagmar Aaen" has unique capabilities to gather data even in remote areas where research vessels are scarce. Fuchs believes that the ship complements their work. Smart measurement technology equipped on the ship allows the crew to collect and share data.

Established by Fuchs in 2015, the "Ocean Change" project delves into alterations in the oceans and their influence on the climate and coastal landscapes.

Enrichment Data:

Overview of the Expedition

  • Objective: The expedition aims to document and study the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems, providing essential insights into these changes in the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

Focus

  • Climate Change Impacts: The expedition is centered around understanding how climate change impacts marine environments, examining changes in water temperature, CO2 levels, salinity, and phytoplankton presence.
  • Citizen Science: Arved Fuchs is also associated with the "Sailing for Oxygen" project, inviting citizen participation in marine data collection through initiatives like the EyeOnWater app.

Route

  • Legs: The expedition is divided into two key legs, the first leg covering the eastern Baltic Sea, and the second leg focusing on the North Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean.
  • Starting Point: The expedition commenced in Flensburg on June 1, 2025.

Data Collection

  • Scientific Equipment: The sailing ship, Dagmar Aaen, is outfitted with advanced scientific equipment like an OceanPack and a CCD probe for data collection and transmission.
  • EyeOnWater App: Participants contribute by using the EyeOnWater app to report water color changes, offering insights into ecological conditions.
  • Arved Fuchs' mission, "Ocean Change," delves into employing science to study the effects of climate change, focusing specifically on the health-and-wellness of marine ecosystems within the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and the eastern Atlantic.
  • During the journey, Fuchs will collaborate with citizen scientists, leveraging the "Sailing for Oxygen" project and the EyeOnWater app to gather comprehensive environmental data.
  • The expedition's overarching goal is to contribute to the understanding of climate-change impacts on marine environments, focusing on alterations in water temperature, CO2 levels, salinity, and phytoplankton presence.
