Amidst Russo-Ukrainian conflict, surgeon transplants heart of child through enemy lines for life-saving operation

In the midst of escalating conflict and ongoing Russian attacks on Kyiv, Dr. Borys Todurov, Director of the Kyiv Heart Institute, led a team to perform a remarkable medical achievement - the first pediatric heart transplant in Ukraine. This operation took place under high-risk circumstances, showcasing the resilience and commitment of Ukrainian healthcare professionals to critical care even in wartime.

The heart transplant was made possible by a selfless decision from the donor's family. A four-year-old girl, who had been declared brain-dead following serious injuries, became the donor for a seriously ill child who had been living with a heart disease for several years. Her mother, a medical worker, agreed to have her daughter's organs donated, providing a new lease of life for another child.

Dr. Todurov personally escorted the donor heart across the city, braving active shelling and dangerous conditions. He was speeding through Kyiv in an ambulance, transporting the precious cargo to the Heart Institute on the opposite side of the city. A video captured Dr. Todurov driving through a burning fire near the road, underscoring the perilous journey he undertook to save the child's life.

The transplant was carried out on a child, highlighting the complexity and rarity of pediatric heart transplants in Ukraine. Two of the three recipients of the transplants were in critical condition and would have had just days or weeks to live without the transplants. The immediate success of the transplant under such conditions is a remarkable milestone, although the long-term outcomes for the patients are not yet known.

The Russian attack on Kyiv was still ongoing when Dr. Todurov performed the heart transplant at the Heart Institute. Two people were killed and dozens more injured in the attack on Thursday. Crossing the Dnipro during a Russian attack on Kyiv is dangerous due to exposed vehicles and Ukrainian air defences targeting Russian drones and missiles.

This event underscores the challenges faced by medical professionals in conflict zones and their dedication to saving lives against all odds. The Ukrainian Transplant Coordination Centre expressed condolences to the family of the donor girl and gratitude for their difficult but important decision. Dr. Todurov's role as the leader of the Kyiv Heart Institute and his direct involvement in this historic transplant demonstrate the advancement in Ukrainian cardiac care despite the conflict.

The Ukrainian people continue to face hardship and uncertainty, but stories like this serve as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the nation and the commitment of its healthcare professionals to providing the best possible care, even in the most challenging of circumstances.
