German Driving Instructor Under Investigation for Drunk Driving
A driving instructor in Vorpommern is currently under investigation for allegedly driving under the influence (DUI) during a driving lesson. The incident occurred at a gas station near Greifswald on Tuesday.
According to reports, the man was found to have a high blood alcohol content level of 1.61 per mil, significantly exceeding the legal limit for driving instructors during their duties, which is 0.0 per mil.
The investigation began when police officers found the driving instructor at his home after the driving lesson. An eyewitness reported seeing the driving instructor purchasing a bottle of wine and drinking from it at the gas station.
The man allegedly placed the bottle of wine in his trunk and sat beside his driving student. Police emphasized that such actions would not be allowed even for riding a bike or driving a horse carriage.
As a result of the investigation, the driving instructor's driver's license has been temporarily suspended. If found guilty, he could face fines, points on his driving license, temporary or permanent driving bans, and potential loss of his driving license or instructor certification.
German traffic law enforces strict penalties for DUI offenses without differentiating broadly by region such as Vorpommern; penalties are national. For example, a driver caught significantly over the alcohol limit may face monetary fines, points deducted from their driving license, driving bans ranging from one month to several months, and the risk of losing their driving license or instructor certification.
DUI enforcement commonly involves sobriety checkpoints and tests, including field sobriety tests (FSTs) and evidential breathalyzer tests performed by police to confirm impairment. If convicted, instructors may face additional professional sanctions since driving under the influence conflicts with their role as responsible drivers and educators.
In this case, the driving instructor's actions have raised concerns about the safety and reliability of driving lessons in Vorpommern. It is crucial for driving instructors to uphold the highest standards of responsibility and professionalism to ensure the safety of their students and other road users.
