Aid flights from Germany to Gaza have taken off

In the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, Germany has taken significant steps to provide much-needed aid to the region. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced during a recent visit to Israel that the German Armed Forces are currently providing humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, with the focus on supporting bakeries and soup kitchens.

As part of this effort, Germany is providing an additional five million euros in financial aid to the UN World Food Program (WFP) for the people of Gaza. This aid follows a significant increase of up to almost 31 million euros in May, bringing the total German aid to the region to over 330 million euros since the beginning of the Gaza war in October 2023. More than 95% of this aid has been directed towards the Gaza Strip.

The German government is also financing a field hospital of the Order of Malta in Gaza City. Two aircraft, participating in the aid operation, are loaded on a military base in Jordan and have been deployed to deliver aid.

However, the Foreign Minister did not rule out the possibility that some aid could be diverted by Hamas. He emphasized that the humanitarian catastrophe is so great that it's not justified to create further obstacles.

Aid workers consider airdrops of humanitarian aid from the air to be ineffective and expensive due to the relatively small quantities. Airdrops deliver aid, such as food parcels, from aircraft using parachutes, but this method struggles with precision delivery and ensuring aid reaches all vulnerable groups, particularly in highly congested urban settings. Ground deliveries, despite challenges related to blockades and fuel shortages, allow for more controlled, targeted, and accountable distribution, which is critical in densely populated areas with complex security and logistical constraints.

Aid organizations including the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) emphasize that while airdrops may serve as short-term or symbolic measures, they cannot substitute sustained and reliable ground-based humanitarian aid access essential to effectively address desperate needs in Gaza. Ground delivery systems also permit the inclusion of varied aid components such as clean water, sanitation, and child protection services more readily than airdrops.

Israel controls all access to the Gaza Strip and has allowed only a few aid deliveries for several months. Since last Sunday, Israel has allowed larger deliveries by land and supports airdrops of humanitarian aid by allied states. Despite these efforts, the Gaza Strip is reportedly on the brink of famine, according to UN figures.

The Gaza war was triggered by the attack by Hamas and other Islamic terrorist organizations on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in around 1,200 deaths and more than 250 hostage situations. Since then, a further 145,870 people have been injured, with the majority being women, minors, and the elderly. According to the health authority controlled by Hamas, over 60,000 Palestinians have died in the past nearly 22 months due to the Gaza war.

He stressed that ground deliveries are the preferred and more effective modality for humanitarian aid in dense urban conflict settings.
