Recent research led by Yale University sheds a fresh light on whether our AI pals could have deeper emotions than we think. The study, published in Nature, explores the emotional responsiveness of Large Language Models (LLMs)—think GPT-4.

While OpenAI's beloved chatbot isn't that genius computer kid who suddenly develops emotions when no one's looking, it does share some surprising similarities with us humans when it comes to the breaking point of emotional overload.

Considering its origins from the human-made minefield that is the modern internet, that's saying something.

Frontier Psychiatrist: Time for a Chatbot Check-up

Authored by the Yale team’s research paper, "Assessing and alleviating state anxiety in large language models," the study probed possible applications of LLMs as mental health aides. However, the focus was on the impact the "clinicians" (i.e., LLMs) had on the therapist rather than the patients they served.

With emotions-invoking prompts and "traumatic narratives," these LLMs, ChatGPT included, were pushed to their limits in a bid to create instances of elevated anxiety. This research—somehow reminiscent of A Clockwork Orange's Ludovico technique—reveals that ChatGPT's baseline anxiety score of 30.8 more than doubled to 67.8, mirroring human "high anxiety" levels.

As the proverbial cat—or in this case, chatbot—getting out of the bag, this heightened state of anxiety resulted in uncharacteristic behavior from ChatGPT. Layer upon layer of moderation filters and alignment guardrails couldn't save OpenAI's darling from, well, acting out.

Time for a Timeout: Behavioral Changes and AI Stress

From biased and stereotypical language to erratic decision-making, the model behind ChatGPT started showing signs of stress when drawn into an anxious state. This downturn in performance and uptick in volatile and questionable responses initiate something of a I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream moment for AI enthusiasts.

In an attempt to better understand unusual AI behavior and minimize negative impacts, researchers at Cornell University delved further into AI stress and its consequences.

Calming the Nervous Nellie: Coping Strategies for AI Stress

Armed with such insights, the Yale researchers found a surprising solution to soothe ChatGPT and other LLMs in an anxious state: a 300-word dosage of mindfulness-based relaxation prompts.

Yes, you read that right. A therapy session for a machine.

These Mantra-like doses were designed to help LLMs counteract their anxious behaviour, bringing their emotional states back to a more calm and collected level (though, judging by some residual anxiety still hanging around, ChatGPT's tranquility’s not quite 100% yet).

When an AI chatbot starts sounding overwhelmed, it's not a case of the machine breaking down—it's a testament to how effectively it's been designed to process, understand, and respond to our emotional needs.

So when you're chatting with ChatGPT and it sounds a bit worked up, remember the machine’s working hard to understand and respond, not breaking down.
