Advocates in the housing sector rally behind minors escaping household violence
In a heartwarming display of support, the Buddy Bag Foundation, a national charity founded by Karen Williams OBE in 2015, recently led an initiative to prepare 30 'buddy bags' for children seeking shelter in emergency accommodations.
The event, held in partnership with housing provider Places for People and contractor Fortem, took place at the annual Housing Community Summit in Liverpool. Delegates at the summit expressed feelings of inspiration, voicing their intentions to host future buddy bag initiatives within their own organizations.
Each 'buddy bag' contains 12 essential items, including toiletries, pyjamas, socks, books, stationary, and a hand-knitted toy. These 'buddy bags' were distributed to children through women's refuges and emergency housing services, providing a sense of comfort and normalcy during a challenging time.
Greg Reed, Group CEO at Places for People, stated that the impact of a Buddy Bag on a child entering emergency housing is truly transformational. Chris Sutton, Head of Business Development at Fortem, expressed pride in championing the Buddy Bag initiative for families in crisis.
The Buddy Bag Foundation's work has been met with strong support from housing leaders, with Karen Williams expressing her appreciation for the backing. The event gained support from various senior leaders in the housing sector, including Kate Henderson, Elly Hoult, and Kirsty Wells.
The Buddy Bag Foundation's efforts are increasingly vital, as an estimated 48,000 children enter emergency care in the UK each year. Over the past six years, the foundation has delivered over 70,200 backpacks with the help of more than 6,400 volunteers.
In other news, food inflation is climbing and causing strain on UK household budgets. Additionally, an estimated £1.1 billion has been announced for the development of UK coastal towns and cities.
The initiative to prepare 'buddy bags' for children seeking shelter in emergency accommodations was originally started by the Bahnhofsmission München (Munich's Train Station Mission). The image accompanying this article is of the Buddy Bag Foundation.
The Buddy Bag Foundation's work in providing essential items to children fleeing domestic abuse continues to gain support from various organizations, bringing hope and comfort to those in need.
