200+ Experts Urge Germany: Prioritize Rights in Middle East Policy

Over 200 scientists, united in the expert group 'Beyond Staatsraison,' have published a paper urging the German government to base its Middle East foreign policy on international law. The paper, titled 'Beyond raison d'état,' challenges the current practice of prioritising state interests over citizen rights and the rule of law.

The expert group, comprising Middle East specialists from various political backgrounds, recommends that Germany adopt a policy that respects the same rights and self-determination for all parties involved in the Middle East conflict. They argue that the term 'raison d'état' is too vague and can override these principles.

The paper criticises Germany for continuing to supply weapons to Israel, despite the International Court of Justice's ruling to protect Palestinians from genocide. It highlights that, since the export ban, Germany has allowed weapons deliveries worth at least €2.46 million to Israel. The authors also point out that a German submarine was used by Israel to attack ships in the Gaza flotilla, including those with German activists, as confirmed by US intelligence sources.

The paper recommends that Germany support Israeli and Palestinian civil society, promote a common historical narrative, and maintain open dialogue channels. It also calls for an end to illegal weapons supply to Israel. The authors aim to shift Germany's foreign policy towards a more law-based approach, respecting the rights of all parties involved in the Middle East conflict.
